La Rabida Children's Hospital

La Rabida Children's Hospital is a hospital on the South Side of Chicago helping children with chronic illness, severe disabilities or have been abused. The hospital has a long history of volunteers and donors who support the hospital.[1] The hospital's mission states that it "maintains an ongoing commitment to caring for children and families regardless of their ability to pay."[2] The hospital It is located along the Lake Michigan shoreline of Jackson Park. The hospital was founded in 1896. The building was originally constructed as an exhibition hall at the 1893 World's Fair for Spain to display a replica of the La Rábida Monastery. After the fair, the building was donated to Chicago. It was converted into a sanitarium for care of sick children. The original building was destroyed in a fire in 1922. The hospital continued to operate at various location around the neighborhood for several years before a new permanent building was completed. A new permanent building was constructed in 1932 along with an additions in 1954, 1959 and 1992. [3] Today it continues this tradition of specialized care.
